In 2022, we built a 1 Ha forest enclosure for 5 sun bears at the Samboja Lestari sanctuary of the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) in Indonesia. This new Enclosure P is the latest of the 15 enclosures A to O built between 2017 and 2020. It brings the holding capacity of BOSF to 75 bears at Samboja. On 29th November 2022, a group of 5 bears were moved to the new Enclosure P and they are now enjoying the 1 Ha of forest at their disposal.
In November 2022, we also built a corridor linking 2 enclosures, “Bottom Yard” and “Training Enclosure 3” at Samboja Lestari. We did this to allow easy transfer of the 2 young female bears, Lucy and Alaya, who were living in “Bottom Yard” to “Training Enclosure 3” where 2 other young female bears, Sulis and Adele, are kept. This 12m long corridor has a grid door in the centre allowing the bears to meet before being put together.
In August 2022, thanks to the help of volunteer Philip Stubley, the Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) transferred 5 bears to the 1 Ha enclosure that we had built just before the pandemic more than 2 years ago. We are very happy for the bears who had been waiting for many years in cages to finally enjoy a bit of forest.
